Food Pantry

Individuals and families with a food need and income is within income limits. Eligibility rules vary by the location, so you will need to contact the group where you plan to apply to find out it’s rules.

Where do you apply?

Application is made at local agencies, usually a local church or other organization. Food pantries usually have specific days and hours when food can be obtained. To find an office check out Illinois Food Banks site.  If you live in the Chicago area or collar counties also check out Direct2Food

Often agencies that do a food pantry also provide many other services, including clothes closets, training and housing assistance. Ask about other programs available.

What happens after you apply?

At your first visit you may need to bring the following with you:

  • Identification. example: Driver's license, photo ID
  • Proof of income. example: your last two paycheck stubs, income tax form, Medicaid or Food Stamp ID, or All Kids' card
  • Proof of residency. example: your utility bill or recent mail

If approved you will be given food items that you can take home to help prepare meals. If you have specific dietary needs such as halal or kosher, let the food pantry staff know. If they don’t have what you need, someone may be able to tell you about another resource.
